Just a Chair

DSC 0147 001 Just a Chair

This thrift store chair needed a serious face lift…it was stubborn, but I won!

When I picked it up, I was overwhelmed by the massive amount of staples that this chair had in it..the old upholstery was covered by new one, stapled over, just a complete mess..

After stripping it down to bare bones, I started fresh, cleaned it really well, painted in high gloss white and new upholstery..

The fabric is by Dwell Studios and bought from www.fabric.com , my go to online store for fabric inspiration..This was the third time that I bought from them, and I highly recommend it..Fast delivery, great quality, I am just a happy customer..and no, they haven’t paid me to say that..

And this time, I did it right, and covered the staples with double piping, that I sawn on my brand new sewing machine…yes, I am so excited..it was my very first time sewing the double welt coard, and I was nervous, but I just followed the wonderful instructions I found on Centsational Girl, and I made it through just fine..

I just like the clean look that the chair has now…it just seems to fit anywhere..

What a great fabric, and a great chair. I like how the little oval detail matches the oval detail on the table beside it!

    • Denise says:

Thank you Courtney! I havent even realized how much they match until you brought it to my attention!

  9. DeeAnna says:

What a great transformation. I’m so impressed with your sewing skills. My sewing machine still makes me nervous!! It looks beautiful!

    • Denise says:

Thanks DeeAnna! I am still scared of my sewing machine, and I think I will try one of those sewing classes from Joanne, just to get a refresher…

  10. Gwen says:

That fabric is amazing! I’ve never ordered from fabric.com, but I am in love with that cool chair!

  11. Linda Leyble says:

Hi – great porject. I love the old, vintage chair and the “today” fabric from Dwell Studio. I have purchased from fabric.com as well – I agree that they are a good company. Last few years though I went and got a reale number and am purchasing wholesale at Robert Allen (where I eblieve most of the Dwell Studio fabrics can be found). So – I save some $. But since you are buying a small amount – I think you are doing well with fabric.com

I want to get a sewing machine – do you like your Simger. I am not the best sewer, but I’d love to give what you have done a try!!!

    Great project…

    Linda

PS – I am following you. Hopefully you will visit my blog as well and follow!

    • Denise says:

Hi Linda! Thanks so much for stopping by and following! I love your blog and the work that you do. I just got my sewing machine and I really love it. I am not the best sewer either but this machine compensates for that. I want to expand my business and do some home decor projects, and was looking into trying to buy wholesale fabrics. I love Robert Allen fabrics..how do you apply with them? I am not sure where to start..
      Denise

      • Linda Leyble says:

        Hi Denise…

First…I got a resale/Tax ID number. You can google it and go through many of the sites that offer it (mine cost about $60). Or – your accountant can do it for you…or go to your State’s dept of corporations and get a form there. I am not incorporated – I am a sole proprietor.

After applying, I was sent a number – and that is your tax ID number. Robert Allen asks you for this before you can open an account. Also open an account with a few other fabric companies that are relatively easy to get in to – like Barrow Fabrics (they have nice fabrics and are relatively inexpensive as well) and Norbar Fabrics. You can find them online. I opened with them first – bought some inexpensive fabrics first and so I had a history. Then I went to Robert Allen. RA ask you for other companies you have accounts with. If you have other companies that you have purchased things from – you can include them – I also included a specialty paint dealer – you could also use an Annie Sloan dealer (even if you don’t have a tax ID number) – they are looking for some purchasing history.

RA will let you pay the state sales tax in addition to what the fabric costs are (plus shipping). If you do not pay the tax upfront – you will have to pay taxes yearly or every quarter – and include this in your tax info every April 15th. So – I advise you to pay the tax – you already will be getting a great discount on the fabrics…I just paid $29 a yard for a fabric that retails for $70…so it’s a savings! I don’t mind paying tax – I add it in for more clients to pay.

So – go to the fabric companies – open accounts and buy some fabrics from them – you can try Robert Allen first also – but I didn’t. Go to Robert Allen online and then look on their site for “To the Trade.” There you will find the form that you fill out and fax or email to them – with the info they want (Tax ID number etc).

        Any questions…just email me!

What Singer model did you get by the way!! I need one for very nearsighted – as my eyesight is not what it used to be…but I think I could do some basic stuff with it (pillows etc).

        Linda

        • Denise says:

Linda, you are AMAZING!!!!! Thank you so much for all the informations, you saved my life..I want to sew some pillows and other decor stuff to sell, and I was looking all over the internet for some affordable fabrics..now, I know what I need to do!!
I can’t believe you bought the fabric so cheap!
I bought a Singer 7430 and so far I am more than pleased with it. It was pretty affordable and it does some basic embroidery too, letters, numbers, etc..Since you said that your eyes are not what they used to be, you will like this model, because it has an needle threader, that helps out a lot..the only inconvenience I found so far, is changing the foot..I have fat fingers and it was a nightmare the first time..I have it all under control now.
          I bought mine from http://www.allbrands.com/categories/903/15308-singer-7430-30-dollars-car-vac-145-stitch-full-siz

Once again, thank you, thank you, thank you!
          Denise
